indesign imposition
Typo Book
The term ‘imposition’ is a printing technique, whereby pages of a publication are placed in a certain
sequence ready for printing. Once these pages are printed, they are folded for binding and are in the
correct order for reading.
 |
IMPOSITIONED |
The individual pages of the publication are ‘impositioned’ or arranged on a large sheet called a ‘flat’, this is
then used to produce the plates used for printing.
The plate prints a single ‘form’ or impression from the flat. The other side of the sheet is printed back to
back in a process called ‘work and turn’ or ‘work and tumble’ (depending on the printing machine).
The sheet is then folded into a ‘signature’, and then bound along with other signatures. Once bound the
publication is trimmed.
Imposition and Printer Spreads
Different printers will use slightly different imposition templates for multiple page jobs. When planning your
pages for print, it is a good idea to speak to the print-room early in the process and they are more than
happy to provide you with the correct template.
We read a book in the order of Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, Page 4 ... Unfortunately, this is not the way we print them. The order pages are printed is directly related to the amount of pages there is in a book. For
example, if the book is 16 pages, then Page 1 will be sitting on the right of Page 16. It sounds confusing
doesn't it?
