How to write a Rationale

A rationale is given, along with the logo and corporate identity, to the client. It helps the client understand where you are coming from and explains the benefits of this logo design.

Consider the following points to help you write a rationale for your logo design and each of your chosen corporate identities.

Design principles:

  1. Emphasis/contrast
  2. Proximity/groupings
  3. Balance
  4. Alignment
  5. Harmony/proportion
  6. White space
  7. Repetition
  8. Colour

Other design principles

  1. Message conveyed and creativeness
  2. Typography (use of type)
  3. Layout (use of grids)
  4. What were your initial goals for the logo? And how have you met them?

Rationale for Wired with One Logo

The main emphasis and focus of what this logo is trying to convey is to show WiFi and coffee brought together to symbolise an Internet cafe.
The coffee cup resembles the WiFi symbol and there is a contrast between the colours to show the client two different images in one picture. Two different colours are used to show the two different images that are trying to be conveyed.
White space is shown where the handle is to represent the coffee cup. This gives the viewer to see the cup as a full image of a coffee cup.
Invisible lines have been used to emphasis the white space created.
The balance between the Wi-Fi symbol shows the even number of bars on each side is used to give the illusion of a balanced image where it also suggests that there is a harmonious presences between the bars of the Wi-Fi. The “steam” from the “coffee” shows harmony between the two colours used.
The logo is aligned to the centre as this is the main focus of the message of the meaning. Repetition of the images used would be the WiFi bars as one shape is identical to the other two bars, this shows the viewer the images been of identical in shape.
 Colour is a major emphasis for this logo. The blue colour was used to be bright and stand out. The brown draws the eyes attention to what the message of the logo is trying to convey. The main feature is the cup where the brown draws the eye towards this image. Blue and brown have a bond and unity to signify that the client’s business is corporate being an Internet and a cafe business.
The typography that was used was the journal font. It matches the business name with a wired effect, so therefore the business name is Wired with One.

Target Audience - Male and Female 20 to 60 years - holiday makers and visitors
Prepare Logo and Corporate Identity as Press Ready PDF files, then Package.
Also provide an RGB colour version of logo at 72dpi for future website.

The chosen logo was to incorporate a coffee cup with a Wi-Fi symbol. Splitting the Wi-Fi symbol in half with different colours for the coffee cup, adding a handle and steam and the other half of the Wi-Fi was to give it a corporate colour look.

By having a cup of coffee and being able to connect to the internet in one spot is truly a magical experience of what the Wired with One business has to offer.
