Australia is one of the most urbanized countries in the world yet has a strong connection with the bush. Australian literature, art, and folklore is significantly about stories of settlers hardships on the land, bushrangers that roamed the countryside stealing, squatters who searched for new land to settle and farm, sheep shearers, and miners hoping to strike it rich. These examples of Australian expression have one common theme; they are all stories of hardships, of ordinary poor people searching for something more from life. They are stories of battlers (a famous saying in Australia is "Aussie battler") and Australian's have a strong desire to support the under dog or battler.
Logo- these are the visual symbols that can be seen in the logo:
Stars, boomerang and the hills hoist. The stars represent the Southern Cross which is a symbol on the Australia flag. The constellation of the Southern Cross is a significant navigational feature of the southern hemisphere.
The boomerangs represent aboriginal culture.
The hills hoist represents an icon that was invented by an Australian.
When all of these symbols are linked together, they represent a different meaning to the viewer. For example the hills hoist represents the body of a human, while the boomerang symbolises hands, feet and forming the helmet or hat on the head. By joining the hills hoist and the boomerang together, it can be seen as an image of a person holding a “spear” (in relation to aboriginal culture) preparing and getting ready for battle or others may view it as An “Aussie Digger” An Anzac veteran.
The boomerang on the head of the person may also represent another Australian legend - Captain James Cook a British explorer, navigator, cartographer which discovered Botany Bay and made settlement in Sydney, New South Wales in 1788.
The slogan “Aussie Battler” is represented by the human image preparing for battle. The choice of colour used is important to consider. Two colours that have been used are Pantone Blue 280 C and Pantone Green 348 C. The green represents the green fields, national parks and rainforests that Australia has, but also the part of green and gold that Australia is well known for, especially for wearing uniforms. The blue represents Australia surrounded by blue oceans and rivers. Blue is also on the Australian national flag.
