The origins of Chinese astrology remain a mystery. 

There are 12 signs named after 12 animals.

According to one legend, the Jade Emperor (Emperor of Heaven) called for a contest to invent a way of measuring time. 

All the animals of the kingdom were invited to cross a swiftly flowing river and reach a designated spot on the bank.
